Do you long for the romance and adventure of the perfect sailing vacation: magnificent coastlines, azure waters, temperate breezes, and balmy nights under endless stars? Whether you’re a beginner or experienced sailor, you can make your dream come true in any of the five following world renowned yachting destinations.

Dalmatian Coast

The majestic Dalmatian Coast off Croatia is one of the most gorgeous and fascinating sailing grounds in the world. Blessed with steady winds and crystal clear waters, the Adriatic Sea has countless peaceful natural harbors, over a thousand islands, and some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe. The city of Split is the major departure point for yachting explorations of the islands of Vis, Hvar, and Brac, jewels of the Adriatic. Further along the coast, the city of Dubrovnik rises from the Adriatic in a stunning display of Baroque architecture. Steady winds and fewer crowds make late spring and early fall the best times to sail the Dalmatian Coast.

Yasawa Islands

For those seeking the quintessential tropical sailing idyll, head to the Yasawa Islands off Fiji, where winds are warm and steady, beaches pristine, and palms sway around enchanting azure lagoons. From major Fijian ports it’s a two-hour sail to the island of Naviti, enchanting setting of “The Blue Lagoon”. Two hours further north lies the first of the Yasawa Islands, legendary for their steep mountains and unspoiled beaches. Though tribal villagers are known for their hospitality, be sure to show proper cruising permission to village chiefs before anchoring. Steady trade winds and balmy weather make May to November best for your yachting adventure.

New Zealand

For steady westerly breezes, friendly people and the most boats per capita in the world, head to Auckland, New Zealand, on the Hauraki Gulf. Also known as the “City of Sails”, Auckland is the gateway to 1500 nautical miles of enchanting islands, tropical subtropical forests, and silvery beaches. Over two hundred anchorages are available for exploring as you ride tropical breezes north to the Bay of Islands, a major yachting destination. The best sailing in New Zealand is from November to April, when the weather is warmer and the south-westerly winds lighter.

Greek Islands

Cruise through the historic Grecian Islands, where ancient ruins still stand watch over the azure waters of the Ionian and Aegean Seas. Comprised of over 3,000 islands, the gorgeous Grecian isles offer limitless variations on terrain, wind, climate, and sailing ability required. Countless unexplored beaches, picturesque ports, and isolated inlets make the islands one of the best places to sail temperate winds from March through November. Follow an easy sailing route up the Peloponnese coast, and marvel at ancient ruins, and sophisticated cities. In the Cyclades, marvel at the loveliness of white washed houses and flowery paths winding down to crystal seas.

Grenadines

Located between Saint Vincent’s and Granada, the Grenadine Islands are surrounded by some of the most beautiful waters in the world. Stop off at the island of Mustique to mingle with the rich and famous, or anchor at the deserted Isle de Quatre for a postcard perfect Caribbean day. Lively Port Elizabeth boasts plentiful marinas, restaurants, and bars. On the leeward coast, Admiralty Bay’s sheltered harboring makes it a popular anchorage. Be sure to cruise by the eerie ruined villas of Moon Hole on the southern peninsula of tiny Bequia.

Choices for your dream sailing vacation are as endless and varied as the oceans and coastlines of the world. So, whether you’re looking for exotic lagoons fringed by palms, lively ports, or the romance of ancient ruins, these adventure-filled destinations can fulfill your every wish.

If you decide to sell your boat on your own, start working to spread the word immediately. First, though, you need to determine a selling price. The price should take into account condition of the boat, as well as local market prices. Your boat may be worth less or more, depending on where you live. Scour local listings to get an idea of an average sale price.

Online advertising has become the main way to sell personal items. It is so much easier to look at many online sites, rather than purchase print publications to look for a boat. Since so many more people now prefer online shopping, it is best to list your boat on several websites rather than in print.

Decide what selling your boat is worth to you. There is no shortage of websites that will list your boat for free, and you will have access to plenty of potential buyers. Some sites charge for a listing, though, so make sure you want to sell and think you’ll get a response before posting on these. The sites that charge often offer higher quality service, and they may cross-reference your add with affiliated companies, giving you more exposure. They might also assist you with pricing your boat properly, as well as advertising it well. These companies engage in market research, so their advertising help might be very valuable.

There are certain marketing strategies you should employ when attempting to sell your boat online. If you do all of these things, you will certainly elicit responses from potential buyers.

1. Post a picture. Many buyers will not look any further at a listing if there is no photograph. Make sure the picture is clear and sharp, and taken against a nice backdrop. Try to keep people and any nicer boats out of the photograph. A sunny day is the best time to photograph your boat, because a sparkling, charming look will catch the buyer’s eye.

2. Put some thought into your description. Do not go overboard, but try to write a short paragraph. Focus on what makes your boat unique. Also, be sure to mention any negative details about the boat. As long as they are not big problems, this will actually endear you more to a buyer. Talking about your boat’s shortcomings assures a buyer that you are an honest dealer.

3. Detail the mechanics of the boat. Mention the type of engine, as well as the model, type, and year.

4. Proofread your ad several times. Make sure your copy is grammatically correct and free of spelling errors. Obvious errors may turn off potential buyers. Pay special attention to contact details, such as phone numbers and e-mail addresses.

5. Beware of scammers. Use common sense and judgment to pick out serious buyers from someone who might be trying to pull one over on you. Offers that are “too good to be true,” usually are not true. Ask questions of potential buyers, and do not make yourself seem overly eager to sell.

6. Keep up with your ad and respond quickly to questions. If you do not answer potential buyers, they may go on to find another boat and forget about yours. Vigilance is key to maintaining an online listing.

Clients buying a sailboat should be cognizant of the types and quality of sailboats available. This will ensure that they make a sound and affordable purchase of a vessel that will last a reasonable amount of time. Ample research will help clients determine the proper components of a sound sailboat investment.

Step 1: Research the Sailboat Industry

Determine the proper size boat and type that will suit your needs and sporting capabilities. Sailing magazines, local marinas and newspaper advertisements are solid places to begin the research process. Determine the amenities necessary to make you enjoy your investment and the average price of each amenity. Comparing costs of numerous sail boats will ensure that you receive the best deal possible.

Step 2: Factor in All the Potential Costs of the Boat

Before making a purchase, factor in the costs for maintenance, transport fees, slip rental and any other related costs. This will inform the buyer of the cost of ownership. This should be factored into the final cost of the boat to determine if the boat you decide to purchase will fit your budget both short term and long term.

For instance, buyers should determine if they should purchase a boat with a wood or fiberglass hull. Fiberglass hulls are usually less expensive to maintain in salt water than a wood hull. Factor the cost of corrosion prevention into the cost of ownership of the boat. This will help the buyer prepare for unexpected expenses.

Step 3: Ask the Seller Copious Questions

Inquire about every aspect of the sailboat whether new or used. If used, ask for a copy of maintenance records and request a private inspection of the boat before purchase. Determine if the boat had any leaks or if the boat was in any accidents. Find out the typical maintenance and ownership costs of the boat. If you are a member of a yachting club, inquire to determine if the vessel will meet the regulations of the club.

Step 4: Consider the Timing

Do you have enough cash to pay for the boat? If it’s early in the year – around tax season, you could considering filing an IRS extension. That way you can free up more funds to pay for your dream boat. In any case, make sure you don’t blow all your money on the boat.

Step 5: Know the Required Maintenance

Hull damage, malfunctioning rigging, leaky interiors, broken masts, ripped sails and faulty outboard motors are all costly repairs. Investors should ensure that they have enough money to make these repairs along with cosmetic repairs as needed. Expert sailors may impart some knowledge of repairs necessary for sailboats.

Step 6: Decide on a New or Used Sailboat

Experienced sailors recommend a well-maintained used sailboat. These boats are verified as “sea-ready” and have less to worry about in terms of getting the boat ready to sail. New sailboats have the advantage of you being the first owner, but there are some issues that you, as new sailboat owner, will have to address.

If you decide to purchase a used sailboat, pay attention to the cosmetic issues, as well as, any maintenance issues that vessel may have. Factor in the cost of repair and determine if the vessel is beyond repair or not. This will also help the buyer negotiate a fair price based upon the amount of repair required to get the vessel to optimal sailing condition.

Going sailing can be exciting, relaxing, social, and athletic all at the same time! However, in order to have a fantastic time sailing, you must first select the correct attire for your outing. The right outfit will depend on both the occasion and the climate.

Regardless of the excursion, everyone needs to think about sun protection on a sailing excursion. Take waterproof or water resistant sunscreen that is at least SPF 15. Be sure to apply it several times a day. As with skiing, double exposure is possible on a sailing excursion as the sun’s rays reflect off of surfaces like water or a boat’s light surfaces. If you are particularly sensitive to the sun, consider clothing with built in sun protection. While regular clothing can let UVA/UVB rays through, sun protection clothing provides excellent protection against the sun. It is sold by outdoor outfitters and can be found online as well. Finally, a snug hat to protect your face and ears from the sun will help you prevent a burn. While sailing is fun, coming home from an excursion with a sunburn that lasts for days is not.

Another non-negotiable on a sailing excursion regardless of its length and the day’s weather is water safety gear. While you may not choose to wear a life jacket at all times, you must have access to them and have a life jacket for each person on board. Children and people who cannot swim should wear them at all times. Another less vital but convenient piece of water safety gear is a cord to secure glasses or sunglasses around your neck or to your head. If you wear a watch, be sure it is water resistant.

If you are going on a sailing excursion on which you will be a passenger, you can wear regular attire for the most part. Non-slip shoes are important for any excursion on the water, so be sure that your shoes will keep you steady on your feet. The rest of your outfit can be suitable for the day’s weather. However, since the temperature on shore may not match the temperature when you are on the water, be sure to layer and take a waterproof or water resistant North Face jackets. If the day will be chilly, be sure to wear a warm wool cap and layer your clothing. If you have long hair, take a hair tie; you do not want to spend the day brushing your hair out of your face. You may take foul weather gear and a change of clothing just in case. Be prepared for wind and a variety of temperatures and you should have a comfortable day.

A sailing excursion on which you will be part of the crew will require different attire. While the above suggestions apply, you will want to wear more athletic, loose-fitting, comfortable clothing and your personal flotation device at all times. Wear your jacket over the device so it does not snag on equipment as you move around the boat. If you are sailing on a foul weather day, consider special gear with sealed seams to prevent water leakage. Also be sure to take appropriate sailing gear like sailing gloves and a rigging knife. Sailing is a sport, so as with any sport, you must be sure to dress appropriately and have the right gear so that you can perform your best.

Whether you’re a passenger on a short outing or a member of the crew on an all-day trip, the right attire will make your sailing excursion successful and enjoyable.
